Jury selection begins today in Henry County District Court in the murder trial for an Agency man accused of murdering his pregnant wife.

This will be the second trial for Seth Andrew Techel, 22, Agency. Last year, a Wapello County jury failed to return a unanimous verdict.

Techel faces charges of first-degree murder and nonconsensual termination of a human pregnancy in connection with the murder of his wife, Lisa Marie Techel.

According to a press release from the Wapello County Sheriff’s office, at about 5:23 a.m. May 27, 2012, the office received a 911 report of an individual who had “possibly been shot.” The incident happened in the 8700 block of Fox Hill Road southwest of Agency. Lisa Techel was identified as the victim. The release said that she is the daughter of a Wapello County Sheriff’s deputy and was employed at the Washington County Jail. She was also a reserve deputy in Wapello County.

Seth Techel was later arrested in connection with the murder. He plead non-guilty.

During the trial in Wapello County, Seth Techel said that he found Lisa Techel in their bed after hearing a gunshot while he was showering. Judge Daniel Wilson declared a mistrial after the jury reported being deadlocked.

First-degree murder is a Class A felony with a maximum penalty if life in prison. Nonconsensual termination of a human pregnancy is a Class B felony that carries a penalty of up to 25 years in prison.

Washington County Sheriff Jerry Dunbar confirmed after the incident that Lisa Techel had worked at the Washington County Jail.

“If we could have cloned her and made 100 of her, we would have,” he said. “She was a great person and a mother-to-be. It is unfortunate. We will definitely miss her.”
