DES MOINES — Another exciting weekend of state wrestling wrapped up on Saturday night in Des Moines. Henry County ended up with three placewinners and two top fours out of the county’s seven qualifiers.

Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union’s Jarod Kadel had another memorable run, which ended in second place at Class 1A 106 lbs.

Kadel rolled through his first match, earning a major decision over Cole Whitehead of Cedar Point-Urbana. He topped Pocahontas Area’s Jacob Mielke 8-4 in the quarterfinals and pinned Colby Lillegard, of Bondurant-Farrar, in the final seconds of the match to earn a spot in the title match.

Kadel, the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the class, took on second-ranked Matthew Lewis, of Centerville, in the title match. The two also wrestled in the district final, which saw Kadel win in overtime.

The two went into overtime again, but this one ended with some controversy. After receiving one stalling warning earlier in the match, Kadel was tagged for stalling in the final second of the first sudden victory period, giving Lewis a win in anticlimactic fashion.

New London’s Samuel Loyd had a nice return to Wells Fargo with a fourth-place finish at 132 lbs. in Class 1A.

Loyd began the meet with a late pin over Don Bosco’s Max Wettengel. He then pinned Nate Monahan, of Woodbury Central, in 1:01 to earn a spot in the semifininals.

Loyd was defeated in a high-scoring semifinal by eventual state champion Donny Schmidt, of Wapsie Valley, 15-7, forcing him to the third-place match. In the third-place match, Loyd was pinned by Gabriel Lewis of Denver in 3:03.

Columbus/W-MU’s Cam Rice placed eighth at 138 lbs. in Class 2A, giving the county three placewinners.

Rice began the tournament with a 3-0 decision over Kruiste Kiburz, of Winterset. He was bumped to the wrestlebacks after falling in the second round on a pin in 2:53 against South Tama’s Tanner Probasco.

Rice guaranteed a place on the podium in his first wrestleback, pinning Reed Abbas of Clarion-Goldfield-Dows in 1:40. Rice was bumped to the seventh-place match after being pinned by Prairie City-Monroe’s Colby Tool in 4:42. Bishop Heelan’s Brennan Todd topped Rice in that match with a pin fall in 3:22, landing Rice in eighth place.

Mt. Pleasant’s Corbin Broeker failed to place at Class 3A 106 lbs., but he did get his first taste of a state tournament win. After being pinned in 52 seconds by Southeast Polk’s Devin Harmison in the first round, Broeker bounced back to take out Aime Mukiza of Des Moines North Hoover in his first wrestleback, pinning Mukiza in 3:26. Bettendor’s Aiden Evans ended Broeker’s run with a 12-1 major decision.

Nate Wallace fell in both matches of his state tournament debut. Damond Lockner, of Ft. Dodge, knocked Wallace to the wrestlebacks with a pin in 4:22. Wallace took on Collin Lewis of North Scott later on in the day Thursday and was pinned in 57 seconds.

New London’s Javis Krieger had three tight matches, two of which went to overtime. Krieger was beaten in the first round by Sibley-Ocheyedan’s, falling 7-3 in the first sudden victory period. He did win his first wrestleback on a 6-4 sudden victory win over Missouri Valley’s Connor Lange, but was eliminated by MFL MARMAC’s Michael Egan 6-2 in his next match.

WACO’s Cody Crawford had a 1-2 performance at Class 1A 285 lbs. Crawford fell to Enrique Maravilla, of Manson Northwest Webster, in the first round, falling via pin fall in 3:07.

Crawford pinned Montezuma’s Grant Battreall in 1:27 in his first wrestleback. He faced West Sioux’s Darlyn Marquez in the next wrestleback where he fell on a 7-2 decision.
