Lincoln Park Zoo —

On May 28th, 2005 Romeo hatched along with five other nest mates. Five of the six cygnets survived to fledge and to be released by the Iowa DNR. Romeo's Mom hatched at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo in 1996 from an egg collected in Alaska. Gathering eggs from Alaska has allowed swan breeders in the lower 48 states to significantly expand the gene pool and thus to add vigor to the population. Romeo's Mom still lives at the Lincoln Park Zoo up to the present time. Romeo's Dad arrived at the zoo in 1998 from a private source and his history is sketchy. He passed away in 2010. As You can see alot of folks have invested alot of time, money and committment into the restoration effort.

The senseless slaughter of a young pair on the verge of passing on the treasure of Romeo's breeding is particularly tragic.
