Larry “Whit” Whitaker

Larry “Whit” Whitaker, 78, of Danville, died on Jan. 2, 2017, at New London Specialty Care.

The memorial service for Whitaker will be held on Friday, Jan. 6, at 11 a.m., at Elliott Chapel, in New London. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m., with the family receiving friends from 10 a.m., until the time of the service. Rev. Michael Hess will officiate. According to his wishes, cremation has been accorded with inurnment at Elmwood Cemetery, in Morning Sun, at a later date.

A memorial has been established.

Whitaker was born on April 1, 1938, in Keokuk, the son of Orval L. and Ruth Flora Mackie Whitaker. He was a 1956 graduate of Keokuk High School. On July 21, 1963, he married Janice S. Klaus, in Morning Sun. He served with the United States Air Force at the end of the Korean War until 1960, at Lowery AFB, in Denver, Colo. He served with the 8th Air Force Strategic Air Command S.A.C. in New Foundland, Labrador and Greenland.

He worked 31 years at Champion Spark Plug as a major set-up repair operator. After retiring in 1991, he became maintenance supervisor at the Danville Care Center.

He enjoyed mushrooming, hunting, fishing, model railroading, airplanes, and being with the family.

He attended Calvary Baptist Church, in Mt. Pleasant.

Whitaker is survived by his wife; a daughter, Christy (Soman Puzhankara) Schelling; one grandson; and one sister, Sandra Davis, of Quincy, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Robert Whitaker; two sisters, Mildred Goldsberry and Julia Whitaker; and a daughter, Shari Whitaker.
