Photo by: Karyn Spory Bret Hileman, of Mt. Pleasant, was driving north on Grand Avenue when his vehicle began making an odd noise. Hileman pulled over when the four-door sedan began to smell like an electrical fire. The vehicle caught fire after Hileman safely exited. The Mt. Pleasant Fire Department was called to the scene and proceeded to extinguish the fire.

A Mt. Pleasant man escaped before his vehicle burst into flames Sunday evening.

Bret Hileman was driving north on Grand Avenue, near the Correctional Facility, when he said his vehicle started making a “funny sound” a little after 4 p.m., on Sunday, April 30.

“It smelled like an electrical fire so I pulled over and got out,” he said.

It was once Hileman had exited the vehicle that flames ignited.

Hileman stood on the side of the road as the Mt. Pleasant Fire Department and the Mt. Pleasant Police Department arrived on the scene.

It only took crews a few minutes to extinguish the fire.

Hileman said his wife was on her way to come pick him up. The four-door sedan was “just an old work car” Hileman said of the incident.

South Grand Avenue was closed briefly during the incident. Traffic was re-routed to East Bell Drive.

The cause of the fire has not been determined. No one was injured as a result of the fire.
