Mertens, Ryon win in Fairfield

Mertens and Vanderham go one-two to lead boys to team gold, Ryon leads girls to third

FAIRFIELD — There was a lot of Maroon and Gold in front of the big school cross-country races in Fairfield on Thursday night.

Cody Mertens and Kyle Vanderham led the Mt. Pleasant boys to a team win with a one-two finish. Abby Ryon dominated the girls’ race to lead the girls’ team to third.

The boys’ team won the meet by 15 points over Fairfield. The Panthers ended the meet with 47 points and the Bloodhounds scored 62.

Mertens won the race by almost 50 seconds. He finished in 16:09.16, well ahead of the rest of the field.

When the rest of the pack came to the line, it was Vanderham in front. He held off Ottumwa’s Conner Riley for a second-place finish in 16:58.69.

Cade Warner nearly broke the top 10 for Mt. Pleasant. He broke the 18-minute mark with a 17:59.38, which was good enough for 11th. Dalton Moyle placed 15th in 18:18.14 to give the Panthers four in the top-10.

Drake Warner finished in 18:27.25 for 21st place. Alec Gardner was 22th place in 18:28.50, and Dakota Triska placed 32nd with a final time of 18:54.83.

The girls’ team scored 71 points, which was just six points behind Ft. Madison for second place. Ottumwa won the meet with 42 points.

Ryon topped the girls’ field with a final time of 18:59.52, well ahead of the rest of the big names in the SEC. Taylor Murray gave the Panthers another top 10 finish, crossing the line in 21:03.14.

Kendall Dascher was the third Panther to cross the line. She placed 16th in 21:56.64. Cristina Carthey (22:!5.87) and Claire Holtkamp (22:30.37) were 22nd and 23rd respectively. Liz Perry was 30th in 23:18.50 and Aurora Vansickle placed 36th in 24.21.00.

Winfield-Mt. Union placed third in both the boys’ race and the girls’ race in the small school class. The boys scored 92 points on the day and the girls were at 111 points.

Brody Barton had another great finish, placing fourth in 17:35.32 to lead the boys. Jarod Kadel was 12th in 18:33.27. Asa Gipple placed 23rd in 19:53.55. Dane Sweezer was 26th in 20:11.96. Jacob Kongable placed 27th in 20:13.19. Talon Newton was 35th in 21:25.46 and Nolan Ross placed 38th in 21:38.64.

New London’s Lexi Brown, who runs for the Danville-New London team, placed second in the girls’ race in 20:57.04. That lead the Bears to a third-place finish.

The top W-MU girl was Pearl Krieger-Coble, who finished fifth in 21:12.81. Cecelia Hemsworth finished 16th in 23:00.03. Farran Helson was 17th in 21:12.78. Isabella Mertens placed 36th in 25:58.12. Whitney Vantiger was 37th in 25:59.76. Johndree Harris placed 38th in 27:12.87, and Fionna Sparrow placed 45th in 28:17.16.
