CEDAR FALLS — Boys’ indoor track season officially got underway on Tuesday when Northern Iowa University hosted the Dickinson Relays. A handful of athletes from Mt. Pleasant and Winfield-Mt. Union were on hand, and the two Henry County schools combined for five top-25 finishes, four of which came from the Panthers.

The big story of the day came in the 3200-meter invite. Mt. Pleasant distance star Cody Mertens made his return to the track with an outstanding performance in the 3200-meter run. He topped a stacked field to take home first place with a final time of 10:01.25, over three seconds faster than Moise Habineza of West Des Moines Valley.

Rylan Seberg got off to a nice start with a top-15 finish in the 400-meter dash. Seberg placed 13th, finishing the race in 53.78 seconds.

Kyle Vanderham placed 24th in the 800-meter run, crossing the line in 2:11.07. The Panther 4X200 team snuck into the top 25 as well, finishing 24th in 1:39.51.

Kolten Buster represented W-MU in the high jump. He leaped 5-10, putting him in a seven-way tie of 14th place, the highest finish of the day for the Wolves.

The Panther boys’ track team will be at Cornell College for their next indoor meet, on Friday March 9 at 4 p.m. The Mt. Pleasant girls will run at Cornell College today (Thursday) in a meet starting at 4 p.m.
