Mertens wins, MP girls get second in Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG — The season is officially underway for the Mt. Pleasant cross-country teams. The Panthers were in Williamsburg on Tuesday night and both teams came away with a top-five team finish and two top-five individual placements. Cody Mertens cruised to a first-place finish in the boys’ race to give Mt. Pleasant an individual gold.

The girls’ team placed second in their first meet under new head coach Lyle Murray. The Panthers scored 60 points, which placed them just three points behind Williamsburg, who scored 57.

Abby Ryon led the way for the Panther girls. She crossed the line in second place with a time of 20:15. Emily Staal of Springville-Central City won the meet with a 19:44.

Taylor Murray made it two top-five finishers for Mt. Pleasant with a fifth-place finish. She crossed the line in 21:06, which was 25 seconds ahead of the sixth-place runner.

Mt. Pleasant had five runners in the top 25. Kelsey Notestein was 15th, with a 22:45. Kendall Dascher placed 17th, in 23:22, and Cristina Carthey placed 21st in her first high school meet, finishing in 23:44.

Claire Holtkamp placed just outside of the top-25. She ran a 24:08, which put her in 27th. Liz Perry rounded out the varsity Panther girls with a 25:34 for 40th place.

The Panther boys finished fourth with 83 points. Oskaloosa took the top spot in the boys’ team standings with 55.

Mertens was the big story for the boys. He cruised to victory with an impressive time of 16:48, a full 30 seconds ahead of second place. Kyle Vanderham wasn’t too far behind him with a 15th-place 18:29.

Dalton Moyle made it three MPCHS boys in the top 15. He placed 15th with a time of 18:29. Cade Warner (19:42), Drake Snavely (19:43) and Alec Gardner (19:48) placed 31st, 32nd and 33rd respectively.

Mt. Pleasant picked up a handful of top-10 finishes in other races. Aurora Vansickel was sixth in the JV girls race with a 25:43. Audrey Lord placed eighth in the girls’ middle school race in 10:30.

Joey Holtkamp finished eighth in the JV boys’ meet, in 20:28. Owen Vansickel was ninth in the boys’ middle school race, finishing the 1.5 mile race in 9:54.

The Panthers will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 2. Mt. Pleasant will travel to Central College in Pella for a meet beginning at 9:30 a.m.
