MP Area Development Commission receives state honor for business retention

May 03, 2013

DES MOINES — The Mt. Pleasant Area Development Commission (MPADC) was honored Thursday for its work in helping a leading local manufacturer create jobs.

Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad presented the MPADC with a Business Retention & Expansion Award for assistance provided to Nypro Kánaak Iowa from 2009 to 2011.

Accepting the award at the Iowa SMART Economic Development Conference in Des Moines were Nypro Kánaak Iowa General Manager Dennie Heckman and Mount Pleasant Area Chamber Alliance Executive Vice President Kiley Miller.

The Iowa SMART Economic Development Conference is the state’s largest annual conference devoted to economic development. Now in its 28th year, the SMART Conference includes business and community leaders, elected officials, board members and those involved in economic development across the Midwest.

Nypro Kánaak Iowa is an injection molding company that provides precision molding to customers in the consumer industrial, electronics and telecommunications, healthcare and automotive industries. The Mt. Pleasant facility averages the fastest mold change times in the industry.

The MPADC assisted Nypro Kánaak Iowa in securing funding and permits to construct a rail extension to its facility, making it possible for the company to receive deliveries of plastic material via rail freight. The cost savings from rail delivery helped Nypro Kánaak Iowa win a major contract that generated 40 new jobs. The company now has 98 full-time equivalents in Mt. Pleasant.

“The most important duty of an economic development organization is to support the businesses that are already operating in the community and employing local residents,” Miller said. “We were proud to be invited to work with Nypro Kánaak Iowa and we are humbled by this award.”
