The Mt. Pleasant baseball season opened up on Monday night when the Panthers hosted Iowa City Regina, the second ranked team in Class 2A.

The Panthers hung in for most of the game, but the Regals busted the game open in the final three innings and took the contest 11-1.

The Panthers trailed just 2-1 after four innings, getting their one run on an RBI single from Caleb Potts, which scored Jordan Magnani in the bottom of the third inning. Regina, however, tacked on three runs in the fifth and six runs in the seventh.

Magnani led the team offensively, going 2-4 with two doubles and a run scored. Keegan Rich had one hit in the game, finishing 1-3.

Colby Potts was on the mound for four innings to start the game and he kept the Panthers close despite a lack of runs crossing the plate. He gave up just two earned runs on four hits, while striking out five batters. He also had one hit on the night.

“He pitched real well,” said Mt. Pleasant head coach Brent Broeker after the game. “He left the game when it was 2-1. He struggled a bit in the first inning, threw maybe a couple more pitches than he should have. But he fought through that and we ended up pulling him for pitch count reasons, and he was coming up against those guys for the third time.”

Players who came in from the bullpen were Bryce Anderson, Trace White and Jaxon Hoyle. They struggled to contain a stacked Regina offense, which scored nine runs against the Panther pen including a couple of homeruns.

Mt. Pleasant will be back at home tonight (Tuesday) when they host the top-ranked team in 3A, Davenport Assumption, for a doubleheader. That double-dip will begin at 5 p.m.
