MP baseball, softball teams win first games

The Mt. Pleasant baseball and softball teams picked up their first wins this weekend. MP baseball took down Chariton 8-5 at home on Friday night, and the Panther softball team beat Muscatine 11-1 in the Louisa-Muscatine tournament Saturday before dropping games to West Liberty (10-0) and Louisa-Muscatine (12-5).

The Panther baseball team jumped out to an early lead on Friday night. The Panthers took advantage of a little shaky Chariton defense, playing small ball to score two runs in the first inning and four runs in the second to take a 6-0 advantage after two innings.

Chariton cut the lead to 6-2 after 5.5 innings. Mt. Pleasant added two insurance runs in the sixth, but the Chargers did score three in the fifth and had the tying run at the plate before relief pitcher Jaxon Hoyle shut the door.

“We’ve got a lot of team speed, so I’ve got four or five guys in the lineup that can bunt at any time,” head coach Brent Broeker said about the quick start. If we can use that to get guys on, we’re going to do it, and try to make them make mistakes off that.”

Keegan Rich went 2-3 with two runs scored in the win. Chase Lamm was 1-2 with three runs scored. Rylan Seberg, Caleb Potts, Colby Potts and Trace White each had one base knock on the day.

Jordan Magnani picked up the win on the mound. He went five and one-third innings, giving up two unearned runs on two hits and no walks, while striking out 11 batters.

In the softball team’s win on Saturday, the Panthers scored four runs in the fourth inning, three in the third, three in the fourth and one in the sixth. Muscatine’s only run came in the third inning.

Chi Glaha went 3-5 with two RBIs in the win. Samantha Broeker went 2-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Savana Walls went 2-3. Makayla Cam, Lyndi Vantiger and Keelyn McNamee all had one RBI.

Anni Liechty went 1-3 with two RBIs at the plate, and had a nice outing in the circle, throwing six innings and giving up just one earned run on six hits and four walks, while striking out two batters.

The Panthers had just three hits in their 10-0 lost to West Liberty. McNamee took the loss in the circle, giving up 10 runs (six earned) on 15 hits and four walks.

The Panthers scored the opening run in their 12-5 loss to Louisa-Muscatine, plating a run in the second inning. L&M scored the next 10 runs to take a 10-1 lead. Mt. Pleasant cut hte lead to 10-5 with four runs in the fourth, but the Falcons put two more up in the second.

Liechty went 1-2 withh two RBIs in the loss. Krabill went 2-3 with an RBI. Cam went 2-4 with an RBI and Walls was 1-3 with an RBI. Hannah Newman made her first start in the circle, throwing five innings and giving up 12 runs (11 runs) on 11 hits and five walks, while striking out one batter.

Both Panther teams will be back in action tonight (Tuesday) for their first Southeast Conference doubleheaders against Keokuk. Those games begin at 5:30 p.m.
