MP flexes muscles at Steve Roth Relays

WASHINGTON — Three area teams competed in the Steve Roth Relays on Thursday night. The Mt. Pleasant, WACO and Winfield-Mt. Union boys were all in attendance.

Mt. Pleasant had the best day of any of the area teams. The Panthers scored 147 points, which led all Class “A” squads. W-MU and WACO were both in Class “C.” W-MU scored 70 points and WACO scored 58.

The Panthers won seven events against a stacked Class “A” field. Mt. Pleasant had four individual wins and three relay wins.

Mt. Pleasant won both the high jump and the long jump. Sam Beatty took the high jump with a 6-00. Keegan Rich dominated the long jump with a 21-09.50. Rylan Seberg placed third in the long jump, at 19-04.

Cody Mertens ran a fantastic 3200-meter run, finishing well within the 10-minute mark at 9:47.03. Jake Lowe was first in the 110-meter high hurdles, winning in 15.06 seconds, and Cole Burns was third in the 110-highs in 15.35 seconds.

Mt. Pleasant’s shuttle hurdle team of Keegan Rich, Chase Lamm, Burns and Lowe took first in 57-73 seconds. The distance medley team of Khang Truong, Tate Shull, Copeland and Jacob Stukerjurgen took the top spot in 3:48.76, and the 4X100 team of Truong, Burns, Seberg and Copeland took the gold in 45.09 seconds.

The Panthers had three second-place finishes. Seberg placed second in the 400-meter dash, crossing the tape in 53.40 seconds. Mertens placed second in the 1600-meter run, finishing in 4:42.71, and the sprint medley team of Burns, Lowe, Copeland and Kyle Vanderham took the silver in 1:41.07.

Riley McQuiggin finished third for Mt. Pleasant in the shot put, throwing a 45-08.50. Seberg placed third in the 100-meter dash, finishing in 12.06 seconds. Vanderham was third in the 800-meter run, crossing in 2:05.20, and Lowe was third in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing in 58.88 seconds.

W-MU’s Brandon Snowden won two events to lead the Wolves. Snowden won the 200-meter dash in 24.24 seconds and the 100-meter dash in 11.78 seconds. WACO’s Colton Horak was second in the 100-meter dash, crossing in 12.12 seconds.

Horak took the 110-high hurdles for WACO, finishing in 16.59 seconds. W-MU’s Juanito Piper placed third, crossing the tape in 18.10 seconds.

The WACO 4X100 team of Will Edeker, Drew Kissell, Elijah McGohan and Calvin Battle crossed the line in 47.87 seconds to pick up another win for the Warriors.

WACO and W-MU went second and third in the sprint medley. WACO’s squad of Battle, Kissell, McGohan and Horak took second in 1:41.59. The W-MU team of Buster, Piper, Snowden and Rodgers finished third in 1:43.35.

W-MU had two top-three finishes in the high jump. Talon Newton was second with a leap of 5-08, and Buster was third with a jump of 5-06. The Wolves’ 4X100 team of Jared Arnold, Nick Davis, Brady and Bryant Holtkamp took second in 55.46 seconds. Brody Barton took third in the 3200-meter run, finishing in 11:13.08.

McGohan took the 400-meter dash for WACO, finishing in 55.07. The Warriors’ shuttle hurdle team of Battle, Edeker, Kissell and John Skriver took third in the shuttle hurdle, crossing the tape in 1:13.63.
