The Iowa High School Athletic Association released its bracket for the Class 3A boys’ basketball state tournament on Tuesday. Mt. Pleasant was named the two seed and was paired up with seventh-seeded Waverly-Shell Rock.

The Go-Hawks knocked off Charles City 55-43 in their substate final to punch their ticket to the state tournament. Like Mt. Pleasant, Waverly-Shell Rock is making a return trip to state after finishing in third place last season.

This will be the second time in six years that the two schools were matched up in the state quarterfinals. The Go-Hawks knocked the Panthers out of the 2013 state tournament 54-49 in overtime, and would win their next two games to secure a state title. Waverly-Shell Rock was the three seed in 2013 and Mt. Pleasant was the six seed.

Mt. Pleasant and Waverly-Shell Rock will play in the third Class 3A quarterfinal, which is set to tip off at 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday, March 6.

Cedar Rapids Xavier is the top seed in the 3A tournament. The Saints narrowly escaped South Tama 59-56 in their substate final. They’ll take on eighth-seeded Marion at 11:15 a.m. Marion earned Cinderella status with an upset win over Davenport Assumption, taking that game 55-49 to earn their spot.

Glenwood ran past Harlan in the second half to win their substate 82-69, earning the four seed. They’ll take on fifth-seeded Norwalk, who knocked off Winterset 74-58 to punch their ticket to Des Moines. Those two teams are scheduled to go right before the Mt. Pleasant game, at 1 p.m.

The final quarterfinal of the day will be third-seeded Oskaloosa against sixth-seeded Sergeant Bluff-Luton at 4:30 p.m. Oskaloosa outlasted Carlisle 61-48 in their substate and SB-L held off a second-half rally from Bishop Heelan to win their substate final 76-66.

If Mt. Pleasant does top the Go-Hawks on Tuesday, they would play in the second semifinal on Thursday, March 8, at 3:45 p.m. The Panthers would take on the winner of Oskaloosa and SB-L.

The Class 3A championship game will take place on Friday, March 9, at 6:30 p.m. The third place game will be that morning at 10:30 a.m.
