MP girls begin year with a win

DURANT — The girls’ basketball season officially tipped off for Mt. Pleasant this weekend, and the Panthers made the most of their first game of the season.

Mt. Pleasant dominated the first quarter and won each of the four periods at Durant on Saturday en route to a 60-39 win.

The first quarter set the tone for the Panthers, who had their best offensive output and held Durant to just a handful of points. Mt. Pleasant won the period 18-5, which allowed MPCHS to cruise through the next three periods.

Mt. Pleasant narrowly won the second quarter, 13-12, to take a 31-17 lead into halftime. They outscored Durant 14-10 in the third quarter and 15-12 in the fourth to walk out with a 21-point victory.

Kalynn Batey led the Panthers in the win. She went 6-14 from the field and 4-9 from three-point land for 22 points. She also had five rebounds, three assists and a steal.

Maddie Williamson gave the Panthers a second double-digit scorer from the wing. She was 6-14 from the field and 2-7 from the three-point line, scoring 15 points. Williamson also had three rebounds and two assists, and led the squad with three steals.

Isabel Ashton scored nine points for the Panthers. She also pulled down four rebounds and had two steals in her first varsity start.

Taylor Murray had a big day at the point guard position. She scored four points and finished the day with 10 assists, tying the school record for most assists in one game in just her first varsity start. Murray also ended the day with two rebounds and two steals.

Elli Liechty had four points and six rebounds. Sadie Carrasco had three points, and led the team with nine rebounds and three blocks. Liechty and Carrasco also each had one assist and one steal.

Emma Huckabone scored three points in the win, and also finished with one rebound. Lexi Magnani had a steal and a rebound, and Grace Bittle had one rebound.

Mt. Pleasant also won the junior varsity and freshman games. The JV team won 33-24, led by Huckabone, who scored nine points. Bittle had eight points and eight rebounds. Lydia Steart scored seven points and had seven steals. Magnani scored five points and Emma Rugg had four.

The freshman/sophomore team won their game 21-19, making it a 3-0 day for Panther girls’ basketball.

The varsity Panthers will have their hands full in their next game on Tuesday, Nov. 21. The Panthers till take on Pella, the 10th-ranked team in Class 4A. That game is set to tip off at 7:30 p.m.
