WASHINGTON — The Mt. Pleasant girls needed a road win on Friday to stay within one game of first place in the Southeast Conference standings and the Panthers were able to get the job done.

Mt. Pleasant used a strong defensive performance to gain a first half lead and held off a Washington rush early in the second half to top the Demons 44-30.

Mt. Pleasant led 12-6 after the first quarter and stretched their lead to 21-11 at halftime, but Washington didn’t go down without a fight in the second half.

The Demons outscored their first half total in the third quarter, putting up 13 points to cut the Panther lead down to six, at 30-24.

The Panthers were able to pull away in the final period, however. Mt. Pleasant had their best offensive period of the game, outscoring Washington 14-6 to walk away with a 14-point SEC win.

Maddie Williamson was red hot all night, scoring 23 points on 8-12 shooting and 3-5 from behind the three-point line. She also co-led the team with three steals.

Kalynn Batey was one point away from a double-double, scoring nine points and pulling down 11 rebounds. She also had three steals. Sadie Carrasco was a perfect 3-3 with eight points.

Elli Liechty and Isabel Ashton scored two points apiece. Taylor Murray didn’t score in the win, but did finish with seven rebounds and a team-leading three assists.
