MP’s Pat Canby to play in Shrine Bowl this Saturday

CEDAR FALLS — Pat Canby, a 2017 graduate from Mt. Pleasant, will be representing the Panthers in the 2017 Shrine Bowl, which takes place this Saturday, July 28.

The Shrine Bowl is an annual All-Star game between northern and southern Iowa. Graduating seniors play in one last Iowa high school game. Canby will be playing for the south team.

Canby, who also runs track and plays baseball for Mt. Pleasant, was selected as a late entry at the end of baseball season and does not yet show up on the online rosters.

Canby was a starting running back and linebacker for the Panthers. In his senior season at Mt. Pleasant, Canby led the team in rushing yards, with 1,007 and receiving yards, with 307.

Canby rushed for 15 of the Panthers’ 19 rushing touchdowns in 2016. He had one of Mt. Pleasant’s four receiving touchdowns on the year. Canby led Mt. Pleasant in total points, with 100.

Defensively, Canby ended 2016 with 53 tackles, three solo tackles for a loss, three assisst tackles for a loss and one sack. He also had one interveption, which he returned for 23 yards, and one fumble recovery.

The biggest game of Canby’s career came on Sept. 2, 2016 in Mediapolis. He carried the ball 20 times, and rushed for 187 yards and five touchdowns. He also had his one interception in that game.

Canby will be playing alongside a couple of familiar faces. Washington’s Bryce Sinn and Oskaloosa’s Bennett Spry will also be on the south squad.

The Shrine Bowl proceeds go to The Shriner’s Hospital for Children. Funds are developed by ticket sales, advertising, merchandise, contributions and scholarships. To date, the game had raised over $2,358,000.

Saturday’s game will begin at 4 p.m., at the UNI-DOME in Cedar Falls. Doors open at 2 p.m.
