MP Tennis teams fall to Fairfield

Panther boys fall in home nail-biter, girls’ team swept on road

The Mt. Pleasant tennis teams opened their Southeast Conference schedule on Monday evening against SEC rival Fairfield. Both teams were defeated by the Trojans, with the boys losing 5-4 at home and the girls falling 9-0 on the road.

The boys’ team split the singles matches 3-3. Ethan Weber won the No. 1 match 8-2 over Gannon Courtright. Jaxon Hoyle battled out a 9-7 win over Dante Cingiri in the No. 3 match, and Jack Schimmelpfennig took the No. 6 match 8-5 over Will Sheppard.

Corbin Broeker was defeated 8-1 in the No. 2 match by Logan Williams. No. 4 Elijah Plooster lost a 9-7 nailbiter in the No. 4 match against Jarod Willmon, and Donny Arledge fell 8-3 to A.J. Greiner in the No. 5 match.

Mt. Pleasant was only able to win one doubles match of the three played. Weber and Schimmelpfennig took the No. 2 match 9-3 over Cingiri and Willmon. Broeker and Hoyle fell 8-3 in the No. 1 match against Courtright and Williams, and Plooster and Arledge dropped a tight No. 3 match 8-6 against Greiner and Sheppard.

David Nguyen and Clayton Henriksen competed in junior varsity matches. Nguyen fell 8-7 to Noel Peterson and Henriksen dropped his singles game 8-5 against Dylan Barras. Nguyen and Henriksen also played a JV doubles match, falling 8-2 to Peterson and Barras.

Boys’ head coach Tyler Rodgers said the meet was “a good night for some, and hopefully an eye opener for others.”

The Panther girls’ team went 0-6 in singles matches. No. 1 Quin Whaley was defeated 8-0 by Anatta Charoenkul. No. 2 Erin Zihlman fell 8-0 to Yana Gaskell. Hallie Sandeen dropped the No. 3 match 8-1 against Cami Schaefer.

Sierra Barton fell 8-1 to Hermela Gabremanian in the No. 4 match. Breeana Runyon dropped the No. 5 match 8-1 against Anna Beasley, and Shaleen Thiengmany lost 8-4 to Allison Krumboltz in the No. 6 match.

Whaley and Zihlman dropped the No. 1 doubles match 8-1 against Charoenkul and Gebremanian. Sandeen and Barton fell 8-1 to Gaskell and Schaefer, and Runyon and Thiengmany were taken down 8-1 by Beasley and Krumboltz in the No. 3 match.

Six Panthers played in junior varsity singles matches. Elle Larson fell 8-6 in her match. Madecyn Anderson dropped her game 8-0. Mikayla Ackles fell 8-1. Olivia Larson dropped her game 8-0, and Maggie Fitzpatrick lost both of her games 4-1.

E. Larson and Anderson dropped their JV doubles match 6-2. Ackles and O. Larson also played a JV doubles match, losing 6-1.

The MP boys (1-1) will be on the road in their next game. They’ll face Centerville on Friday, April 6, at 4:15 p.m. The girls’ team (0-2) won’t play again until Thursday, April 12, when they face Fairfield at 4:30 p.m.
