It may be early in the wrestling season but the Southeast Conference race is already starting to take shape.

The first month of action was enough to allow a couple of teams to break out from the field. Mt. Pleasant and Washington are 2-0 and on a collision course for a potential championship-deciding matchup in January.

Mt. Pleasant has used balance and depth to roll through the first month of duals with just one overall loss. The Panthers broke the school record for dual wins last season and they look to be repeating the success from 2017-18.

Mt. Pleasant has taken down both Lee County teams in the conference. The Panthers crushed Keokuk 52-12 at home on Dec. 12, and topped Ft. Madison 39-33 on the road with a tie-breaking pin by Jaden Davis in the final match.

Surprisingly, Mt. Pleasant is the only team without a ranked wrestler according to The Panthers have simply been a more complete team than their first two SEC opponents.

Washington, much like Mt. Pleasant, has used their depth to jump out to a fast start. The Demons do have one ranked wrestler, Tristin Wesphal-Edwards, who sits at No. 3 in Class 2A 170 lbs.

The Demons have dominated in their two duals. They ran over Fairfield, 56-12, at home and then moved to 2-0 with a 48-22 road win over Keokuk.

Ft. Madison’s only SEC dual was their six-point loss against Mt. Pleasant, so the Bloodhounds aren’t out of it just yet.

Ft. Madison has two ranked wrestlers in Class 3A. Harlan Steffensmeier is No. 4 at 152 lbs., and Sam Hayes is No. 7 at 195 lbs.

Both Keokuk and Fairfield have one ranked wrestler. Brent Hammel represents the Chiefs in the Class 2A rankings, sitting at No. 3 in the 126 lbs. rankings. Fairfield’s Brendon Lunsford is the No. 6 wrestler at Class 2A 285 lbs.

The biggest date to look forward to in the conference race is Thursday, Jan. 11. Mt. Pleasant will host Washington at 6:30 p.m. The Demons will host Ft. Madison one week earlier, on Jan. 4. Mt. Pleasant’s last SEC dual will be on Jan. 18, when they take on Fairfield on the road.

Listed below are the full SEC wrestling standings heading into 2018.

T-1. Mt. Pleasant 2-0

T-1. Washington 2-0

T-3. Fairfield 0-1

T-3. Ft. Madison 0-1
