KNOXVILLE — The Mt. Pleasant baseball team was in Knoxville on Thursday night for a non-conference doubleheader. The MP Panthers dropped two games to the Panthers of Knoxville, falling 9-3 in game one and 2-1 in game two.

Mt. Pleasant had a boat load of trouble offensively in game one, at least for the first five innings. Knoxville scored one run in the second inning and five in the third to take a 6-0 lead, and MP was scoreless through five frames.

The Panthers started a comeback attempt in the top of the sixth. Rylan Seberg and Cooper Huckabone hit back-to-back singles to start things off. Caleb Potts reached on an error and all three runners scored, one on an RBI groundout by Caleb Potts and two on an error. After 5.5 innings, it was 6-3 Knoxville.

Mt. Pleasant wasn’t able to hold Knoxville in the bottom of the sixth, however. Knoxville put together three runs of their own to add some insurance before the final inning.

Huckabone went 2-3 with a run scored in the game one loss. Lamm went 0-3 with an RBI. Seberg, Zach Beason, Keegan Rich, Caleb and Colby Potts all had hits in the loss. Corbin Broeker scored one run as a courtesy runner.

Colby started on the mound for Mt. Pleasant and pitched a complete game. He gave up nine runs (five earned) on 13 hits and three walks, while striking out one batter over six innings of work.

Game two was a pitching dual between Mt. Pleasant’s Bryce Anderson and Knoxville’s Kaleb Streigle, both of which threw a complete game.

Knoxville struck first with a run in the bottom of the first. Anderson tied the game with an RBI groundout in the top of the second inning, but Knoxville re-took the lead with another in the bottom of the second.

The game stayed 2-1 for the rest of the night. In the seventh, Broeker singled with one out and stole second, but was thrown out on the bases.

Nik Coble was 1-3 with a double in game two. Caleb was 1-2. Anderson went 0-2 with an RBI. Broeker was 1-3 with a stolen base, and both Seberg and Jaxon Hoyle went 1-3.

Anderson took the loss on the mound, throwing six innings and giving up two earned runs on six hits and no walks, while striking out three.

Mt. Pleasant fell to 19-14 with the loss. They’ll host Eddyville-Blakesburg-Freemont in their final home contest tonight (Friday) at 7:30 p.m.
