Mt. Pleasant cross-country teams place fifth in Pella

PELLA — The Mt. Pleasant cross-country teams ran in Pella on Saturday and both squads finished in fifth place. The boys’ team scored 120 points in the meet and the girls team finished with a 123. Gilbert took first in the boys’ meet with a 34 and Pella won the girls’ race with 52.

Cody Mertens led the boys’ team with a second-place finish. He ran the race in 16:54, behind only Tyler Rees of Gilbert who finished in 16:28.

Kyle Vanderham had another nice race. He placed sixth in 17:11. Dalton Moyle was 26th in 18:11. Drake Snavely placed 39th at 19:00.

Dakota Triska was 47th overall in 19:13. Joey Holtkamp finished 69th in 20:34, and Logan White placed 70th in 23:07.

The girls were led by Abby Ryon, who had another great outing at 19:47 for second place. North Polk’s Emelia Lesher beat Ryon out for first by six seconds.

Taylor Murray placed 16th in the girls’ race at 21:23. Kelsey Notestein placed 32nd in 22:32. Kendall Dascher was 36th in 22:57. Christina Carthey was right behind Dascher with a 23:01 time and a 37th-place finish.

Claire Holtkamp and Liz Perry rounded out the girls’ times. Holtkamp placed 48th in 24:22 and Liz Perry placed 49th in 24:26.

Both Mt. Pleasant teams will be in action on Thursday, Sept. 7, at Waterworks Park in Fairfield. That event will begin at 5 p.m.
