IOWA CITY — The Mt. Pleasant girls’ basketball teams had their hands full on Tuesday night with a road game against one of the best teams in the state.

The Panthers faced off with 5A No. 3 Iowa City West and hung with them through one quarter before eventually getting pulled away from, 63-33.

The Tigers trailed by just two points after the first period, at 12-10. City West stretched their lead in the second quarter, however, and led 31-15 at the break.

Mt. Pleasant scored nine points in each of the final two quarters but the City West offense was still able to outscore the Panthers 32-18 in the second half to come away with a 30-point win.

Sarah Moffett had 10 points and eight rebounds in the loss. Kalynn Batey had eight points and two steals. Brianna Shelman hit two three-pointers to finish at six points.

Maddie Williamson scored five points, including one three-pointer. Bailey Johnson finished with four points. Abbie Liechty didn’t score, but finished with a team-leading nine rebounds.

The Panthers also learned their postseason assignment this week. They will host Washington in their first round game on Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m. The winner will travel to Marion three days later. Keokuk, Ft. Madison and Fairfield are in the other side of the region.

The Panthers fell to 10-8 with Tuesday night’s loss. They will be back in action on Thursday, Feb. 2, in Centerville. That matchup will begin at 5:30 p.m., with the boys’ game following.
