DONNELLSON — The Mt. Pleasant girls’ basketball team had a shot late to knock off No. 13 (3A) Central Lee on the road on Saturday, but the Panthers came up two-points short of taking down the unbeaten Hawks.

Central Lee escaped the game with a 47-45 win, which handed Mt. Pleasant their fourth straight loss one day after Mt. Pleasant’s SEC game against Ft. Madison was postponed due to weather.

The game was tight throughout the first half. Central Lee led 12-16 after one quarter and 15-6 early in the second, but Mt. Pleasant ended the half on an 11-4 run.

Kalynn Batey led the Panthers with six points in the first half, all from inside the three-point line. Bailey Johnson and Sarah Moffett scored four first-half points apiece and Maddie Williamson knocked down a three-pointer.

The Hawks were able to pull away in the third quarter, leading 37-26 after three, but the Panthers made a big run in the fourth.

Mt. Pleasant was able to claw back in the final quarter to cut the lead to 46-43 with one minute left. The Panthers had a chance to win it in the final seconds but Central Lee hung on for the 47-45 win.

Williamson scored nine points in the second half to get to a team-leading 12 points. She also pulled down five rebounds.

Moffett had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Batey finished the game with nine points, eight rebounds and three assists.

Johnson scored six points in the loss. Kirsten Smith and Rylee Amos each hit a three-pointer in the second half to finish with three and Brianna Shelman had two points and led the team with two steals.

The Panthers fell to 1-4 on the year. They will close the month out with two more non-conference games. The first will be against Davis County at home on Tuesday, Dec. 20, at 6 p.m.
