FT. MADISON — The Mt. Pleasant girls’ tennis team was defeated in their first round regional matchup on Monday in Ft. Madison. The Panthers lost 5-0 against West Burlington-Notre Dame.

The Panthers finished just five matches on the day. Per state rules, once one team has clinched the win with five victories, the match is finished.

Erin Zihlman fell 6-0 and 6-1 to Claire Hackenmiller in the No. 1 singles match. Hallie Sandeen dropped the No. 3 singles match to McKenzie Fry, 6-1 and 6-1.

Sierra Barton was defeated 6-1 and 6-1 in the No. 4 singles match, playing against Riley Brueck. Breanna Runyon fell 6-0 and 6-1 to Kennedy Rheinschmidt in the No. 5 singles match.

Olivia Larson fell 6-3 and 6-2 in the No. 6 match. Larson was matched up against Katie Conner for the Falcons.

Head coach Steve Scott praised the play of Larson, who was forced to play in her first varsity match due to the Panthers being without normal No. 4 player Shaleen Thiengmany.

“Larson made her varsity debut and played very well,” Scott said. “Larson’s performance was particularly encouraging considering that she had not been in the varsity’s drills rotation all season long.”

Barton and Runyon were also forced to bump up one spot, due to the loss of Thiengmany, who had to miss the match due to a previously scheduled academic commitment.

Quin Whaley’s No. 1 singles match was pretty tight before it ended. She fell 7-6 (7-5 tiebreaker) in the first set but led 3-0 in the second set against WB/ND’s Lydia Becker.

The Panthers will play at the regional individual/doubles tournaments in Fairfield on Wednesday, May 16. That tournament is schedule to begin at 9 a.m.
