Mt. Pleasant tennis teams swept by Ft. Madison

Both Mt. Pleasant tennis teams suffered losses in Southeast Conference play on Tuesday against Ft. Madison. The girls fell 7-2 at home and the boys dropped a 5-4 match on the road.

The Mt. Pleasant girls lost all but one singles match. Quin Whaley did win the No. 1 contest, taking down her opponent 8-4 for Mt. Pleasant’s only singles point.

Erin Zihlman dropped the No. 2 match 8-3. Hallie Sandeen fell 8-1 in the No. 3 match. No. 4 Shaleen Thiengmany lost 8-4. Sierra Barton dropped the No. 5 match 9-7. Breanna Runyon fell in the No. 6 match 10-8, and Elle Larson fell 10-8 in a junior varsity match.

The No. 3 doubles team of Barton and Runyon closed out the day with a 6-4 victory to give the Panther girls another point. Whaley and Zihlman fell 8-5 in the No. 1 match and Sandeen and Thiengmany fell 8-1 in the No. 2 game.

The Panther boys started the day out with a 2-4 performance in singles matches. Ethan Weber won the No. 1 match 6-3 and 6-3 for the first Panther win and Elijah Plooster won 6-4 and 7-5 in the No. 4 game.

Corbin Broeker fell 6-1 and 6-4 in the No. 2 match. Jaxon Hoyle fell 6-2 and 6-3 in the No. 3 match. Jack Schimmelpfennig lost a 6-3, 3-6, 10-3 nail-biter in the No. 5 match and Donny Arledge fell 6-4 and 6-3 in the No. 6 match.

The Panthers won two doubles matches. Weber and Schimmelpfennig won the No. 2 doubles match 6-4 and 7-5, and Plooster and Arledge took the No. 3 contest 6-0, 3-6, 1-0(8). Broeker and Hoyle fell in the No. 1 match, however, 7-6(2) and 6-2.

The boys’ team will be back in action today (Tuesday) at 4:30 p.m. against Notre Dame at home. The girls will be back at home on Thursday, April 26, when they host Keokuk at 4:30 p.m.
