Mt. Pleasant to contract for driver's education

Apr 10, 2013

Mt. Pleasant News

A growing trend among Iowa school district is to contract for driver’s education.

Mt. Pleasant joined the list of contractors Monday night when the school board approved a one-year contract with the Open Road Driving School of Mt. Pleasant to instruct young drivers.

One of the primary reasons was cost. “It is just more cost effective when we contract with a private vendor,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. John Roederer said.

The district will pay Open Road $325 per student to handle the program. If there are no problems, Roederer said he would recommend extending the contract to three years. Open Road has said they would hold the line on the $325 price for three years. Students eligible for a fee waiver will be charged $275.

Last summer, the district had 38 students enrolled in the program with 21 receiving the fee waiver. The district charged $400 per student but expenditures were about $6,000 more than revenue.

Two other companies — Triple “R” Driving School and Drive Tek — submitted bids. Triple “R” wanted $340 per student this year with the fee increasing by $5 per student the next two years. Driver Tek asked for $350 this summer and $360 each of the next two years.

Advanced Environmental Testing & Abatement Inc. of Waterloo was the successful bidder among six firms for asbestos removal at Salem and Van Allen Elementary schools this summer. Advanced submitted a bid of $21,935.50. Bids ranged upwards to $30,289.

Some student fees will see a modest increase for the next school year. Most of the increases were under $5.
