Mt. Pleasant travels to Keokuk

Winless Panthers look for first victory against struggling Chiefs
By Ashlee De Wit | Oct 17, 2013

After last week’s big loss to eighth-ranked rival Washington, the Mt. Pleasant football team aims to bounce back against Keokuk and get its first win of the season.

The Panthers are 0-7 so far this year, and Keokuk has had its share of struggles as well.

The Chiefs are sitting at 2-5 overall; their wins have come against Ottumwa by forfeit and against Fairfield, 10-6.

Fairfield topped Mt. Pleasant in a 52-21 game.

The Chiefs lost Gabe Vandenberg to graduation after last season, so this year, the Keokuk offense is led by first-year quarterback Drake Reiter.

Reiter, a senior, has a completion percentage of 57.1 and has thrown five touchdowns — and 12 interceptions — this season.

Many of his passes find their way to Kolton Martin, a sophomore with 41 receptions this season. He averages 10 yards per catch and has scored four of the Chiefs’ passing touchdowns.

Senior Bryce Baxter has the other touchdown catch and is averaging 10.3 yards per reception this season. He has 25 catches on the year.

On the ground, Keokuk is led by junior Dakota Shaw, who has picked up 490 yards in 112 attempts, averaging 4.4 yards per carry. He has scored once.

Reiter is second on the team with 88 rushing yards and has made it into the end zone twice.

“We’ve seen the tape — we know they’ve got some good size, and they have strong (running) backs,” Mt. Pleasant Coach Shawn Striegel said.

The Panthers played hard against a tough Washington team last week, and they look to bring the same intensity to Friday’s road game. Kickoff is scheduled for around 7:30 p.m., following the freshman game at 5 p.m.
