DES MOINES — The Drake Relays in Des Moines are officially underway and a school record has already been broken one day into the event.

Logan Murray set a new Mt. Pleasant record in the 3200-meter run on Thursday night and put himself in good standings for the race to the state title.

Murray placed 11th overall in the event with a time of 9:34.16. Coming into the day he had the 15th-best time in the state.

Among those who Murray finished ahead of was J.J. Orput, of Carlisle, who was sitting in front of Murray in the Class 3A race.

Murray was the third Class 3A runner to cross the line, finishing behind a couple of state rivals from Marion, Myles Bach (seventh, 9:20.85) and Jeremy Fopma (10th, 9:32.42).

Winning the 3200-meter run was Sam Schillinger, of Cedar Rapids, who finished the race in 9:06.04.

WACO’s Cornell Hulme was in action this morning in the 100-meter hurdles. He finished in 25th place with a time of 11.41 seconds.

Hulme finished second among Class 1A competitors, just behind Avery Moore of Sigourney, who ran the race in 11.34 seconds for 22nd place.

Eight qualifiers in the 100-meter dash will be moving onto the finals. West Burlington-Notre Dame’s Isaiah Trousil topped the qualifiers with a time of 10.76 seconds.

Mt. Pleasant’s Jake Lowe was scheduled to run in the 100-meter hurdles this morning and the 400-meter hurdles on Saturday. He has been scratched from the events due to a hamstring injury.

Still to go this weekend are Murray in the 1600, the Panther boys’ 4X100 team, the Panther boys’ shuttle hurdle team and New London’s Carson McSorley in the 400-meter hurdles. The News will have full results from Drake in Monday’s issue.
