It was only fitting Griffith receive the Volunteer of the Year Award later that evening from the Executive Vice President of MPACA Kristi Ray.

It was hours before the annual Mt. Pleasant Area Chamber of Commerce banquet when they realized they were running out of time. So who did they call? The man who, although he didn’t know it at the time, would later be accepting the Volunteer of the Year award that night: Bob Griffith.

During the Chamber banquet on Thursday, Jan. 25, Kristi Ray, Chamber executive vice president invited Griffith to the stage, praising his impact on the Chamber and the Mt. Pleasant community.

“This year it was a slam dunk,” Ray said. “Our saving grace in the office when the Chamber staff was going a million different directions was Bob Griffith.”

Ray joked that Chamber employees were out of the office more than they were in the office during August 2017, and that during that busy month of State Fair, Midwest Old Threshers and students going back to school, they couldn’t have held together without Griffith.

Before handing the award off to Griffith, Ray read the inscription on the award: “The heart of a volunteer is not measured in size, but by the depth of commitment to make a difference.”

Griffith said that it’s nice to feel needed in the community and volunteering his time is enjoyable. “It keeps me out of the house,” he said. “Whenever they need me, they can call me up.”

Griffith also said he was happy, pleased, surprised and honored to be thought of for Volunteer of the Year.
