New Chamber program welcomes newcomers to MP

Mt. Pleasant Area Chamber of Commerce is rolling out the red carpet for selected newcomers to the community.

“Welcome Aboard” is designed not only to welcome the new residents but also could be a recruiting tool for local businesses, said Kristi Ray, executive vice president of the Chamber Alliance. “I think it could be a valuable recruiting tool for local businesses trying to recruit prospective employees, but it also will be a great way to meet their spouses who want to get integrated into the community.”

Welcome Aboard, which is only available to Chamber members, is a multipronged program, including welcome packets; hooking the newcomers with local real estate agents or landlords; an hour-long tour of the community and a dinner with local residents.

The welcome packet includes community information, i.e. schools, churches, health care facilities, housing, etc.

Ray described the program as a “hybrid” of welcoming programs of other communities.

“Most chamber of commerces offer some type of welcome program,” she noted. However, Mt. Pleasant’s has an added twist with a tour of the town and dinners, which will be hosted periodically.

“Robb Gardner, CEO of the Henry County Health Center, told us about a welcome program that the Great River Health Center has for new employees, so we went there and talked to them and are using some of the things included in its program,” Ray explained.

She said response from Chamber members has been very encouraging. Members were notified a couple months ago about the program, and the Chamber began receiving names almost immediately. Chamber staff member Mikayla Mabeus, who is coordinating Welcome Aboard, already has an extensive list of newcomers, Ray said. “We have quite a few management-level employees comings to town,” Ray said.

In addition to the aforementioned gifts, newcomers also will receive a coupon sheet, courtesy of area merchants.
