WINFIELD — All three Henry County small school volleyball teams were in Winfield on Thursday night as the Southeast Iowa Super Conference held pool play for its postseason conference tournament.

New London went 3-0 on the night to advance to Saturday’s finals, along with second place Central Lee (2-1). Winfield-Mt. Union went 1-2 on the night and WACO went 0-3.

The fifth-ranked Tigers swept all three matches to take first place. They topped WACO 21-7 and 21-8 in the opener, thanks in part to a nine-kill game by Breanna Mettler. Ashley Birdsell finished with seven kills as the Tigers topped W-MU 21-8 and 21-5, and Kaylor Schulte led the way with six kills as New London completed the sweep with a 21-7 and 21-13 victory over Central Lee.

Both WACO and W-MU took Central Lee to a deciding third set, but neither team was able to pull off a win over the Hawks. Central Lee topped W-MU 21-16, 16-21, 15-11 and defeated WACO 21-14, 13-21, 15-8.

In the final match of the night for both teams, W-MU swept WACO 21-16 and 21-8, ending conference tournament play for both squads.

Sixth-ranked Holy Trinity topped pool play in Cardinal, going 3-0. Van Buren picked up the second ticket at that site. West Burlington went 4-0 and Pekin was 3-1 in the West Burlington pool. In the tightest pool of the tournament, Danville and Wapello each went 3-1 to advance out of the group playing in Wapello.

The final bracket is set for Saturday, Sept. 23, at 5 p.m. New London will host Van Buren, with the winner facing off with either Pekin or Danville in the semifinals. Central Lee and Holy Trinity matchup on the bottom half of the bracket, as do West Burlington and Wapello.

All of Saturday’s games will be played at SCC in Burlington, where the conference champion will be crowned.
