New London baseball rolls into postseason

There aren’t many Class 1A teams as red hot as the New London baseball team going into postsesaon play.

The Tigers are riding a seven-game winning streak into the district tournament and they have won 10 of their last 11 contests.

The Tigers won their last three games of the regular season by a combined score of 35-2. They defeated Danville 20-0, Mediapolis 6-2, and Burlington Notre Dame 9-0.

New London needed just three and a half innings to take down Danville. The Tigers scored 11 runs in the first inning, two in the second and six in the third to end the game via the mercy rule.

Britt Noel went 3-3 with a triple, three RBIs and four runs scored. Cole Helmerson was 3-4 with a triple, four RBIs and two runs scored. Keontae Luckett went 1-3 with three RBIs and two runs. Sam Loyd was 3-4 with two RBIs and two runs. Justin Henecke was 3-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and one run and Reno Chiri went 2-3 with two RBIs and two runs.

Isaac McSorley and Tyler Stevenson combined for a one-hitter, throwing two innings each. McSorley struck three batters out in the win and Stevenson struck out two.

The Tigers jumped out to a 5-1 lead after three innings to cruise to victory against Mediapolis. Chiri pitched a complete game, giving up just two earned runs on six hits and zero walks, while striking out six batters.

Noel was 2-4 with a double and two RBIs. Chiri went 1-4 with an RBI. Henecke was 3-3 with a double and a run scored, and Blake Nehring went 2-2 with two stolen bases.

In the win over Notre Dame, New London scored one run in the second inning, one in the third, five in the fourth and two in the fifth. Henecke threw a complete game shutout, giving up just three runs and two walks, while striking out nine.

Noel was 2-3 with a homer and three RBIs. Nehring went 2-3 with a run. Keontae Luckett went 1-3 with two RBIs. Stevenson was 1-4 with an RBI and a run. McSorley went 1-4 with an RBI and two runs, and Mason Porter scored three runs.

The Tigers will begin their postseason tournament tonight (Tuesday) in Burlington against Holy Trinity. That game is set to start at 5 p.m.
