New London basketball teams split with Van Buren

NEW LONDON — The New London basketball teams hosted Van Buren in Southeast Iowa Super Conference Play. The Tigers rolled over Van Buren 66-33 in the boys’ game, but fell 80-22 in the girls’ game.

The high-powered Tiger boys were on fire throughout the first half. New London broke the game open early when a 20-2 first quarter stretched their lead to 40-10 at halftime.

The hot start allowed the Tigers to cruise through the second half. New London outscored Van Buren by just three points in the second half, but that was plenty enough to walk out with a 33-point victory.

Grant Swanson scored 15 points to lead the Tigers in the victory. Alex Dentligner added 12 points, five rebounds and one blocked shot. Keontae Luckett scored 10 points, and led the team with eight rebounds and five steals. Isaac McSorley Added 10 points to give the Tigers four double-digit scorers.

The girls’ team didn’t quite have the experience that the boys’ team had. Van Buren shut the Tigers down 23-0 in the first quarter, and stretched the lead to 40-9 before the break.

Van Buren Continued to score in bunches in the third and fourth quarters, eventually running away with a 58-point win, led by 6’3 post Taryn Scheuermann, who had 26 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots.

Sydni Coleman led the Tiger girls with six points. Layney Loyd and Kristen Rohdy had five points apiece, And the trio of Marah Hartrick, Kara Krieger and Alisha Boles each scored two.

Haley Krieger and Loyd both had four rebounds in the loss to co-lead the team. K. Krieger led the squad with two steals.

The New London boys moved to 2-0 with the win. The girls fell to 0-3. They will be at WACO tonight (Tuesday), in a doubleheader starting at 6 p.m.
