Jan 14, 2014

The New London basketball teams won three of their four weekend games, sweeping Harmony on Friday and splitting with Wapello on Saturday.

The boys’ team won both games, topping Harmony by a score of 83-38 and then Wapello by a score of 65-50.

In the girls’ games, New London won against Harmony by a score of 54-15, but fell to Wapello, 52-42.

Against Harmony, the New London girls were leading 33-9 at halftime and outscored the Rockets 19-0 in the third quarter on their way to the win.

Morgan Christner had a team-high 18 points and Sami Koontz was close behind with 17 points.

Christner also grabbed 12 rebounds to finish with the double-double and had a team-high six steals.

In the boys’ game that followed, New London had a 30-point second quarter to help the Tigers to a 48-21 lead at halftime.

The Tigers finished with a strong second half as well, scoring 19 in the third quarter and 16 in the final eight minutes.

Cameron Watson paced New London with 18 points, one of five Tigers in double figures.

Tristan Kadel scored 16 points, while Hunter Moeller and Quincy Porter chipped in 12 points each. Mitch Boles scored 10.

Watson and Porter each pulled down nine rebounds. Jayden Flowers dished out six assists.

In Saturday’s game, the New London girls had an early lead — the Tigers led 11-8 after eight minutes of play — but were trailing by two points at halftime, 21-19.

Wapello stretched its lead to four points by the end of the third quarter, and outscored the Tigers 16-10 in the final eight minutes to seal the victory.

Christner had a team-high 13 points and 13 rebounds. Koontz added nine points and Paetyn Prottsman pulled down six boards. Addie Lounsbury had five rebounds.

In the boys’ game, New London got off to a strong start, taking a 20-2 lead in the first quarter of the game and going up 39-19 at halftime.

Wapello gained some ground in the second half, but it was too little, too late for the Indians in the New London win.

Kadel paced the Tigers with 14 points. Moeller and Boles added 13 points each and Porter scored 10. Porter also had 10 rebounds.

The New London boys are now 3-6 overall and 2-5 in the SEISC South. The girls are 5-5 and 4-3 in the conference.

Tonight’s games against Van Buren have been postponed and have not yet been rescheduled.

Next up for the Tigers is Friday’s trip to West Burlington. The JV and varsity girls’ and boys’ teams will all play, starting with the JV girls at 4:30 p.m.
