New London boys lose nail-biter

DONNELLSON —The New London boys’ basketball team fell just short on Friday night in a road game against Central Lee that could end up deciding the SEISC South Division. The Hawks knocked the Tigers back one game in the standings with a 56-53 comeback win.

New London had a nice start, jumping out to a 15-11 lead. The Tigers led 22-20 after two quarters and 37-34 after three.

Both teams had their best offensive outputs in the fourth quarter. Central Lee exploded for a 22-point period and took the lead in the final minutes. In the end, the Tiger boys fell three points short and picked up their fourth conference loss.

Keontae Luckett had a big night, leading the team with 16 points, eight steals and three assists. Mason Porter scored 12. Grant Swanson finished the night with nine points. Isaac McSorley had eight points and 10 rebounds. Jalen Birdsell scored six and Koby McBeth had two.

The Tiger girls had a tough time with the Lady Hawks, who are still unbeaten in conference play. Central Lee scored in droves, leading 56-8 at halftime and cruising to victory, 89-13.

Peyton Jackson led the New London girls with four of the team’s 13 points. Sydni Coleman was the leading rebounder, pulling down five boards in the loss.
