RIVERSIDE — Everything was running smoothly for the New London girls’ basketball team through the first three quarters in Riverside on Tuesday night, but a fourth-quarter comeback stunned the Tigers in their first game.

Highland was able to come back from a four-point deficit to start the fourth quarter, take the lead, and top the Tigers 39-33.

New London’s best quarter was the first. The Tigers jumped out to a 10-3 lead after eight minutes. Highland won the second quarter 13-10, but New London still held a 20-16 lead at halftime.

The Tigers held on to their lead in the third quarter, but couldn’t put the Huskies away. The two teams scored eight points each and the Tiger lead was still at four with the scoreboard reading 28-24.

Highland took the lead and stole the game in the final eight minutes. The Huskies outscored the Tigers 15-5 in the final quarter to score a comeback victory and drop the Tigers to 0-1 to start the season.

Breanna Mettler led the Tiger attack with nine points. Alexa Wenger scored eight points. Sydni Coleman had six points and Savannah Sutherland finished with four.

The Tiger girls will be back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 28. New London will hit the road to take on Burlington Notre Dame, at 6 p.m.
