LETTS — The New London girls’ basketball team took on Columbus Community in the first of two games at Lone Tree High School on Friday, as part of the SEISC girls’ shootout. The Tigers topped the Wildcats 39-30, giving a much-needed win to the South Division, who won the shootout 5-4 overall.

The Tiger win was aided by a fast start, led by the defense. New London outscored Columbus 11-3 in the first period to take an early eight-point advantage.

The Wildcats started inching back in the next two periods. Columbus cut the lead to seven points, at 19-12, before the halftime break. After three quarters, New London’s lead was down to five, at 26-21.

The Tigers battened down the hatches in the fourth quarter. New London scored a game-high 13 points to push back against the Wildcat run and lock up a nine-point win.

Kara Krieger led the way for New London with 11 points and five rebounds. Sydni Coleman finished the game with five points and five rebounds. Savannah Sutherland and Kristen Rohdy had five each. Alexa Wenger pulled down a team-leading seven rebounds in the win, and Peyton Jackson led the squad with four steals.

New London combined with four other South Division squads to lock up the 2018 girls’ shootout. Central Lee took the conference title over Pekin, 38-30. Danville cruised past Louisa-Muscatine 47-26. West Burlington topped Wapello 56-47, and WACO smoked IMS 58-38.

Mediapolis had the biggest win for the North Division, knocking off Van Buren 67-48. Highland sneaked past Holy Trinity 62-57. Winfield-Mt. Union beat Notre Dame 43-37, and Lone Tree ran over Cardinal 48-30.

New London’s next game will be in the Class 1A regional first round. The Tigers will travel to Winfield to play against the hosting W-MU Lady Wolves. That game will begin at 7 p.m.
