The New London softball team came up with a 12-0 win over Mt. Pleasant to start the Mt. Pleasant Classic on Saturday, and they finished the day 2-1 after a loss to Class 3A No. 1 West Burlington and a win over Columbus Community.

Victoria Noel took advantage of the deep fences at the East Lake Park softball diamonds to crush two inside-the-park home runs against the Panthers. She finished the game 2-for-3 with three runs and four RBIs.

Sami Koontz was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs knocked in; she also stole four bases.

Morgan Christner got the win, going seven innings and allowing five hits and one walk.

The Panthers made more contact than usual against the New London ace, having seen her four times this season. Christner recorded just three strikeouts.

In their second game of day, the Tigers fell to Class 3A’s top-ranked team, West Burlington/Notre Dame.

They stayed with the Falcons through the first four innings, each team scoring four runs. However, WB/ND plated the winning run in the fifth and tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the sixth for a 7-4 victory.

Four Tigers had one hit each in the loss. Emma Pry took the loss on the mound for New London, giving up nine hits and five walks for seven runs (four earned) in five innings.

In their final contest in the Classic, the Tigers ran to a 13-0 win over the Wildcats.

Christner and Emily Parks each had three hits against Columbus, including a home run for Parks. She also scored three runs.

Noel and Christner each had a double in the game, and Noel had three RBIs. Jorgi Krieger scored three runs.

Christner got the win on the mound, throwing six innings and striking out 13 batters. She gave up three hits and one walk.

It was the second time in as many days that the New London softball team picked up a win over Columbus.

They defeated the Wildcats in a road game on Friday night, 3-0.

Christner was just one walk away from a perfect seven innings in that contest, striking out 15 in the complete game effort and picking up another win.

She helped herself out by going 2-for-4 at the plate with a double. Caitlin Chiri also had a double in the game. Christner and Koontz each had an RBI.

The Tigers are now 20-6 on the season and 5-2 in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference South Division.

They play again tonight (Monday) when they host West Burlington/Notre Dame in a conference game, starting with JV at 5:30 p.m.

They then travel to Danville Tuesday before returning home to host Pekin on Wednesday.

Scores and stats for Mt. Pleasant’s weekend games were not available at press time.
