New London knocks off Highland in close contest

Feb 07, 2018

By Andy Krutsinger, Mt. Pleasant News

RIVERSIDE — New London and Highland had a much closer contest Tuesday night than they did the first time they met this season, but the result was still a Tiger victory.

New London picked up their eighth win in their last nine games, topping the Huskies 78-71.

The Tigers were led by Mason Porter, who had his biggest game since coming back from injury. Porter scored 27 points, matching his performance from last year’s contest in Riverside where he also finished with 27.

Four of the five Tiger starters finished in double-digits. Keontae Luckett had 18 points in the win. Alex Dentlinger scored 13, and Grant Swanson finished with 11.

New London had an outside chance to tie for the SEISC South Division title with the win, but Notre Dame took care of business against Holy Trinity, meaning the Tigers will finish in a three-way tie for second. New London has four conference losses, matching both West Burlington and Central Lee.

The Tigers win the three-way tiebreaker with the Falcons and Hawks, which gives the Tigers the two-seed for the SEISC boys’ shootout on Friday, February 9.

New London will take on Iowa Mennonite in the first of two games at Iowa Wesleyan. That contest will begin at 6 p.m. Both New London and IMS also will compete in the same district when the postseason tournament starts.
