NEW LONDON — The rest of Southeast Iowa is officially on notice after the return of New London’s Mason Porter on Tuesday night. The junior forward played his first game of 2017-18 after missing almost the entire regular season with a finger injury.

Porter’s return came in a dominant 71-9 SEISC South Division win over Cardinal at home. He scored nine points in his first game back.

The Tiger defense didn’t allow Cardinal to reach double-digits, mostly due to a shutout performance in the middle quarters. The Comets were unable to score any points in the second or third.

Tyler Henecke and Grant Swanson led the scoring attack for New London. The two Tigers scored 13 points apiece and were two of four New London players to reach double digits.

Isaac McSorley had a monster day in the win, scoring 10 points and stealing the ball a ridiculous 16 times in the victory. Keontae Luckett had 10 points of his own and Shae Summerfield scored eight.

The Tiger girls played a nail-biter in the game preceding the boys. The girls couldn’t hold on to a late lead, eventually falling 47-10.

New London led 13-10 in the first quarter but saw the Comets tie the game up at 21-21 before halftime. The Tigers took a 31-30 lead into the fourth, but were outscored 17-9 in the final period, which was Cardinal’s best offensive output of the day.

Layney Loyd had 11 points to lead the Tiger girls. Kristen Rohdy and Kara Krieger scored seven apiece. Alexa Wenger filled the stat sheet with six points, nine rebounds and four steals before fouling out of the game. Marah Hartrick scored five points. Sydni Coleman had three and Savannah Sutherland finished with one.

New London will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 26, when they travel to Central Lee for a doubleheader, beginning at 6 p.m.
