No. 5 NL wins DC tournament

DAVIS COUNTY — The fifth-ranked New London Tigers finished the regular season at a scalding hot 34-4 on Saturday when the Tigers swept five teams to win the Davis County tournament.

New London took down Lynnville-Sully, Centerville, Albia, Davis County and Iowa City Liberty to take the tournament title.

The Tigers rolled Lynnville-Sully 21-6 and 21-7. Kaylor Schulte had six kills in the win. Carson McSorley lead the team with nine digs and three aces.

Centerville played New London a little tighter, but the Tigers still swept the Redettes 21-11 and 21-13. Breanna Mettler had eight kills in the win. Savannah Sutherland had 19 assists, and McSorley had 15 digs. Kristen Rohdy was 8-8 with three aces to lead the team in serving.

New London topped Albia 21-6 and 21-13 to finish out pool play. Mettler lead the way with eight kills and McSorley had 12 digs.

The semifinals were no problem for the Tigers. They pounded the hosting Mustangs 25-16 and 25-4. Mettler lead the Tigers with seven kills and Camryn Blint had 12 digs. McSorley had a huge game serving the ball, going 18-18 with six aces.

Finally, the Tigers played Iowa City in the championship. New London had to work hard to pull out a victory, but they did so with another sweetp, 25-23 and 25-20.

Mettler lead the team in the championship with seven kills. McSorley had 25 digs. Blint tallied 17 digs, and Sutherland finished with 19 assists and 13 digs. New London had three aces in the championship, one each for Blint, Mettler and Sutherland.

The Tigers will now wait and see who they play in the second round of regionals after earning a first-round bye. New London will host either Moravia or Moulton-Udell on Monday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m.
