Nobel Peace Prize nominee to speak at Just Peace Outreach Group

Dec 04, 2017

Just Peace Outreach Group (J-POG) is hosting Kathy Kelly on Sunday, Dec. 10. Kelly is the coordinator of Voices for Creative Nonviolence and has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize three times. She received the U.S. Peace Memorial Foundation Peace Prize in 2015. She will be speaking on “Yemen, Afghanistan, and the War against the Poor.”

Kelly has recently returned from Kabul, Afghanistan, where she was working with Afghan Peace Volunteers. She has heard the stories of mothers who cannot feed their children and listened to the fear and hopelessness that people live with. Sixteen years of war have not improved their lives. Kelly shares her insights in “Afghan Women Beg Key Question: What on Earth Has This War Accomplished?” at Common Dreams.

In addition to Kelly’s deep concern about Afghanistan, she has also written about Iraq and Yemen. Her words connect us to the damage our nation does to other countries. “The comfortable nations often authorize the worst atrocities overseas through fear for their own safety, imagining themselves the victims to be protected from crime at all costs. Such attitudes entitle people in Iraq, Afghanistan and Yemen to look in our direction when they ask, ‘Who are the criminals?’”

Come ready to hear how mercy may look and how the church can respond. Join J-POG at Kalona Mennonite Church, 902 Sixth St. Kalona, on Sunday, Dec. 10, as they welcome Kathy Kelly. Come at 6 p.m. for a finger food potluck and conversation. Bring finger foods to share and your own table service. Come at 7 p.m. to hear Kathy Kelly. For more information on the meeting, contact Roger Farmer at 319-653-2547 or Jane Yoder-Short at wilmajane17@gmail.com.
