‘Officially done with winter’

Snow wings taken off motor graders

County Engineer Jake Hotchkiss had the wings taken off motor graders last Monday, touting that “we were officially done with winter that day,” he said during the Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday, March 6.

As spring begins to settle in, Hotchkiss has brush crews working on Iowa and Franklin Ave. and cleaning trucks from what he hopes is the end of ice and sleet.

Last week, road maintenance crews worked on signs, repaired damage to the guardrail on Iowa Ave., placed rip-rap for erosion control on Benton Ave., and did cold patching on Old Highway 34.

Although the department had plans to begin the grading project clearing and grubbing on 140th and Dakota Ave., it was delayed as crews waited for rainy weather to dissipate. Hotchkiss estimates that the project won’t take more than a week to complete.

Hotchkiss added that he also started looking at finalizing details for projects after July 1, heading into the next fiscal year. He is also finalizing 2018 dust control dates.
