SOLON — Bo Vitale scored his 27th goal of the season as the Panthers claimed a 1-0 win over Solon in the Class 2A Substate 5 final on Saturday, advancing to the state tournament.

Mt. Pleasant, now 13-3 on the season, received the No. 3 seed in the state tournamnet, and they will play No. 6 Storm Lake (13-1) in the quarterfinal match on Thursday at 2:45 p.m. at the Cownie Soccer Park in Des Moines. For the full Class 2A bracket, click here.

Vitale helped lead the Panthers to the tournament, scoring the only goal of the substate final match on an assist from Zoom Gwamna.

It was the 27th time this season that Vitale, who graduated from Mt. Pleasant on Sunday, has found the back of the net, the third-highest total of any boys’ soccer player across the state.

Michael Alderson, a fellow graduated senior, had 15 saves in goal for Mt. Pleasant in the substate final, bringing him to 93 saves on the season.
