One individual is dead following a Tuesday morning crash on Winfield Ave.

Seventy-seven-year- old Barbara Garrels died from her injuries after the vehicle she was riding in crashed into two utility poles and four parked cars on Tuesday, May 8.

The accident occurred at approximately 9:25 a.m. According to police reports, Warren Garrels, 82, was driving down Winfield Ave. at a high rate of speed and failed to obey the stop sign. He then drove through the intersection and struck two utility poles and four vehicles. Barbara had been riding as a passenger in the vehicle.

A witness at the scene reported the driver, Warren, was speeding when he reportedly swerved into oncoming traffic, to drive around a parked vehicle, and nearly hit the witness head-on. The witness then swerved into the ditch to avoid a collision before circling around to watch the accident occur and call the authorities.

The Iowa State Patrol crash reported listed both Warren and Barbara had sustained injuries and had been transported to the Henry County Health Center. Barbara died later on Tuesday at the University of Iowa. Funeral services for Barbara are pending at Kimzey Funeral Home.

The Mt. Pleasant Police Department and Henry County Sherrif’s Office assisted at the scene.
