Panther baseball team swept

Tuesday night was a night the Mt. Pleasant baseball team would like to forget. The Panthers failed to convert on a handful of opportunities throughout the Southeast Conference doubleheader and were knocked out of first place via a Trojan sweep. Fairfield took game one 4-2 and game two 11-1 in six innings.

The Trojans scored two runs in the first inning of game one after Mt. Pleasant stranded the bases loaded in the first inning. Starting pitcher Zach Beason kept Fairfield at bay throughout the next three innings.

Bryce Anderson scored a run in the fourth to cut the Trojan lead in half at 2-1. The Panthers loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the fifth but came away empty. Fairfield added a couple of insurance runs in the fifth to stretch their lead to 4-1. Mt. Pleasant scored one in the sixth but that’s all they could muster in the opener.

After another first inning run from Fairfield in game two, Mt. Pleasant tied the game at 1-1 with a score in the top of the second. It was all downhill from there, however, as the Trojans plated three in the third, two in the fifth and five in the sixth to end the game an inning early due to the 10-run mercy rule. Mt. Pleasant had the bases loaded again in the fourth, but again came up scoreless.

“We need to put the ball in play when we have guys in scoring position,” said head coach Brent Broeker after the losses. “We haven’t been able to do that for the last four games and it has hurt us. Once we can do that consistantly, we’ll be able to compete, but three runs in two games isn’t going to beat teams like Fairfield.”

Chase Lamm went 2-3 for Mt. Pleasant in the first game. Jordan Magnani had one double and Caleb Potts knocked in the team’s only RBI. In game two, Seberg had the only extra-base hit, a double, and Anderson had the only RBI. Beason was tagged with the loss in game one and Colby Potts took the loss in game two.
