Panther boys pop Keokuk, girls fall by one

Both Mt. Pleasant tennis teams were in action on Friday evening in Southeast Conference matches against Keokuk. The Panther boys picked up a 7-2 win at home, while the girls fell 5-4 on the road.

The Panther boys had things all wrapped up in singles play, winning five of their six matches. Ethan Weber won a tight match at No. 1 singles, winning 8-6. Jaxon Hoyle won the No. 3 match 8-3. Elijah Plooster took the No. 4 match 8-5. Jack Schimmelpfennig won the No. 5 match 8-6, and Donny Arledge took the No. 6 match 8-2. Corbin Broeker took the lone loss in singles, falling 8-5 in the No. 5 match.

The Panther boys took two out of three games in doubles play. Weber and Schimmelpfennig took the No. 2 match 8-5, and Plooster and Arledge swept the No. 3 match 8-0. Broeker and Hoyle dropped a tight No. 1 doubles match, falling 8-6.

In junior varsity play, David Nguyen won his match 6-1, Clayton Henriksen fell 8-6 and Cole Kelgord won his match 8-4.

The girls’ team took three of the six singles matches. Hallie Sandeen won the No. 3 match 8-6. Sierra Barton won the No. 5 match 8-4 and Breanna Runyon took the No. 6 match 8-1. That was the first career varsity win for each of those players.

Quin Whaley dropped the No. 1 singles match 8-5. Erin Zihlman fell in hte No. 2 match 8-1. Shaleen Thiengmany fell 8-6 in the No. 4 match. Elle Larson was the lone junior varsity player, winning 10-0 in her match.

The girls’ meet went down to the three doubles matches. Barton And Runyon took the No. 3 match 8-3, but the No. 1 team of Whaley and Zihlman fell 8-2, and the No. 2 squad of Sandeen and Thiengmany lost 8-6.

Both teams will be back in action today (Monday) at 4:30 p.m., against Ft. Madison. The girls will be at home and the boys will be on the road.
