Panther girls claim big win at North Linn

Oct 15, 2013

TROY MILLS — The Mt. Pleasant girls’ cross-country team took first place in the North Linn Invitational on Saturday, overcoming a number of state-ranked teams on their way to the win.

The Panther boys’ team placed ninth of 18 teams at the meet.

For the girls, Mt. Pleasant scored 101 total points, with just 23 places and 30 seconds separating their first and fifth runners.

Class 2A No. 4 Cascade was a close second place, scoring 104 points, and Class 3A No. 9 Williamsburg placed third with a team score of 106.

“Three runners were key in our success: Ellie Conrad, who got out well and set a great pace for all of our runners; Emma Ludwig, who ran wild and came in as our second runner; and Hannah Weber, who once again ran very strong and kept our pack tight in the middle,” Coach Jean Caboth said. “Emma (Ludwig) had been fighting a cold and a virus for three weeks and she felt well today. Her running showed it.

“Other other runners are improving, too — personal records for Beth (Wells), Ellie (Conrad), Emma (Ludwig), Natalie (Ita), Megan (Shumaker) and Hannah (Weber),” Caboth added.

Conrad finished the 4K in 10th overall with a time of 15:26.

Ludwig was 17th in 15:39, and Wells completed the course in 15:45 to take 21st place.

Weber was 24th in 15:48, and Chloe Haffarnan was 33rd in 15:56.

Also running varsity was Natalie Ita in 16:06 for 40th place and Megan Shumaker in 17:45 for 102nd place.

The Solon and Vinton-Shellsburg teams each scored 127 points in the meet.

Monticello placed sixth with 176 points, followed by South Winneshiek (180), Iowa City Regina (224), North Linn (235), Marion (261), Starmont (264), Mid-Prairie (264), Center Point-Urbana (275), Benton Community (292), Edgewood-Colesburg (424), Springville-Central City (490), Beckman Catholic (498) and Maquoketa Valley (525).

“We will see Solon again at the state qualifier meet in two weeks,” Caboth said.

Next up for the Panthers, however, is Thursday’s Southeast Conference meet in Keokuk.

On the boys’ side of the North Linn Invitational, Mt. Pleasant was led by Logan Murray in seventh place with a time of 16:53 in the 5K race.

Jack Pieper crossed the line in 18:14 for 38th place, followed by Ryan Hutchinson in 59th with a time of 18:40. Adam Bodenham was 63rd in 18:42 and Josh Beelman was 70th in 18:49.

The Panthers scored 236 points as a team.

Also running varsity for Mt. Pleasant were Alex Warren, 84th in 19:15, and Dalton Krum, 85th in 19:17.

Class 2A’s top-ranked team, Monticello, ran away with the win, scoring just 36 points with three runners in the top 10.

Center Point-Urbana was second with 112 points, followed by Mid-Prairie (130), Marion (130), Williamsburg (173), Vinton-Shellsburg (179), Tipton (214), Solon (232), Mt. Pleasant, Turkey Valley (244), South Winneshiek (248), Iowa City Regina (253), Cascade (293), Bellevue Marquette (340), Benton Community (408), Springville-Central City (460), HLV (493) and Beckman Catholic (536).
