Panther girls drop game against No. 10 Cedar Rapids Prairie

CEDAR RAPIDS — The Mt. Pleasant girls had a mountain to climb on Tuesday night, playing 10th-ranked Cedar Rapids Prairie in a non-conference road game. The Panthers were unable to hang with the state-ranked Prairie Hawks, falling 60-34.

C.R. Prairie got out to a fast start and it took a while for the Panther offense to catch up. The Prairie Hawks led 14-6 after one quarter and outscored the Panthers 17-6 in the second to take a 31-12 lead to halftime.

Mt. Pleasant’s offense faired better in the second half but the Prairie Hawks just kept scoring. C.R. Prairie took the third quarter 21-12 to open up a 52-24 lead after three periods. Mt. Pleasant outscored C.R. Prairie 10-8 in the fourth.

The Panthers were led by Maddie Williamson, who scored almost half the Panther points, with 16.

The junior varsity girls trailed by just eight at halftime but ended up falling 60-19. Karsyn Lamm scored six points and pulled down four rebounds in the loss. Elli Liechty had four points. Emma Rugg had three points and three rebounds. Ryann Davidson and Christina Carthey scored two apiece, and Avery Sutter led the squad with six rebounds.

The Panther girls will host Keokuk on Friday, Jan. 19. The varsity game, which is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip will be for second place in the Southeast Conference. Mt. Pleasant is currently 6-8 overall and 3-2 in the SEC.
