Panther girls drop road game to No. 10 Pella

PELLA — The Mt. Pleasant girls gave 10th-ranked Pella all they could handle through one half of basketball on Tuesday night, but the Lady Dutch were able to pull away in the second half to hand the Panthers a 58-37 loss.

Mt. Pleasant showed the Lady Dutch that they were there to compete early on. The Panthers outscored Pella 14-13 in the first quarter to hold a lead after eight minutes.

The Lady Dutch were able to take the lead in the second quarter, but the Panthers kept it close. Pella outscored Mt. Pleasant 14-12 in the second quarter and the Panthers were down 27-26 at halftime.

Pella started to pull away in the third quarter, but Mt. Pleasant stuck within 10 at the end of three, trailing 43-34 going into the final quarter.

In the fourth, however, Pella was able to shut the Mt. Pleasant offense down. The Panthers scored just three points in the period, and Pella ran away with a 21-point victory.

Kalynn Batey led the Panthers for the second-straight game. She scored 17 points and had a team-leading seven rebounds, as well as two steals. Batey scored 11 of her 17 points from the free throw line, finishing 11-13 from the charity stripe.

Isabel Ashton scored eight points in the loss, including two three-pointers. She also added three rebounds and one assist.

Maddie Williamson had seven points, five rebounds and a blocked shot. Sadie Carrasco scored three points and pulled down four rebounds. Elli Liechty had two points, five rebounds and a steal.

Taylor Murray didn’t score in the game, but led the team with six assists. She also had a nice day defensively, with two steals and one blocked shot. Emma Huckabone had two rebounds and an assist, and Lexie Magnani finished with one rebound.

Prior to the varsity game, the JV team fell 43-22. Lydia Stewart led the team with 10 points. Magnani had five points. Huckabone scored three points. Avery Sutter scored two points and Liechty finished with nine rebounds.

Mt. Pleasant fell to 1-1 with the loss. Their next game will be their first Southeast Conference game and also their home opener. The Panthers will take on defending SEC champion Fairfield on Friday, Dec. 1, at 6:15 p.m.
