Panther girls finish fourth at SEC championships

FAIRFIELD — The Mt. Pleasant girls’ tennis team took fourth at the Southeast Conference tournament on Monday in Fairfield. The Panthers scored three points on the day. Fairfield won the conference with 22 points. Ft. Madison scored 20 and Keokuk finished with eight.

Quin Whaley competed in the singles No. 1 tournament for Mt. Pleasant. She fell 8-0 to Fairfield’s Anatta Charoenkul in the semifinals and dropped the consolation match 8-3 to Ft. Madison’s Katie Larson.

Erin Zihlman fell twice in the No. 2 singles tournament. Zihlman dropped the semifinal match 8-2 to Yana Gaskell, and then fell 8-1 to Daneille Lozano in the consolation match.

Hallie Sandeen finished third in the No. 3 tournament. She fell 8-2 to Ft. Madison’s Kearstyn Johnson in the semifinals before bouncing back to top Keokuk’s Maddi Miller 8-5 for third place.

Shaleen Thiengmany fell twice in the No. 4 tournament. She dropped the semifinal match 8-2 to Ft. Madison’s Larissa Ferrill and fell 8-6 to Keokuk’s Keleigh Hall in the consolation match.

In the No. 5 tournament, Sierra Barton dropped her first round match to Fairfield’s Anna Beasley, 8-2. Barton was able to win the third place match, however, knocking off Keokuk’s Haley Broadwell 8-3.

Breeana Runyon finished third in the No. 6 tournament. She fell 8-0 to Fairfield’s Nellie Higdon in the first round, but took the consolation match 8-2 over Keokuk’s Kara Kavanaugh.

In the No. 1 doubles tournament, Whaley and Zihlman dropped two games. The Panthers lost their semifinal match against Keokuk 8-2 and dropped the consolation match 8-1 to Fairfield.

Sandeen and Thiengmany teamed up for the No. 2 doubles tournament. The Panthers fell 8-0 to Fairfield in the first round and dropped their consolation match 8-6 to Keokuk.

Barton and Runyon also lost to win No. 3 doubles. They fell 8-1 to the Fairfield squad in the semifinals and dropped their consolation match 8-2 to Keokuk.
